Empowering Communities through the Green Deal: Green Deal Goes Citizens Project
The urgency of addressing climate change has sparked innovative collaborations across Europe. One such initiative, the “Green Deal Goes Citizens” project, showcases the power of cross-border partnerships in bringing sustainable solutions to local communities. This blog highlights the project’s objectives, activities, and the impact it seeks to achieve.
At the heart of this project lies the belief that achieving sustainability isn’t just about top-down policies—it’s about empowering citizens. By fostering dialogue, sharing best practices, and creating accessible tools, “Green Deal Goes Citizens” aims to enable local communities to actively contribute to the European Green Deal’s goals.

The project unfolds through three interconnected activities, ensuring a comprehensive journey from research to action:
Research and Exploration: The project began with a kick-off meeting in Germany, where partners delved into successful concepts and installations of alternative sustainable methods. By identifying technical, economic, and legal requirements, partners developed national reports that laid the foundation for a synthesis report. These findings were then reviewed during a partner meeting in Hungary, where best practices with transfer potential across Europe were selected.
Dialogue and Engagement: Dialogue is central to this initiative. Through expert talks, the synthesis report’s findings were analyzed to determine feasible and economically beneficial best practices. Videos were created to communicate these examples, paving the way for engaging directly with citizens. This stage included dialogue sessions aimed at gauging citizens’ readiness to embrace sustainability initiatives while identifying their educational needs. Partner meetings in Romania and France facilitated the exchange of insights and monitored the progress of these conversations.
Concept Design and Implementation: The final phase transitions from planning to creating tangible solutions. Following a partner meeting in Serbia, the project team began designing concepts based on citizen feedback. The outcomes will be compiled into a project brochure, serving as a resource for future implementations. The project will conclude in Greece, where partners will present the developed concepts, finalize applications, and evaluate the overall impact.
Beyond the Project: Fostering Citizen Involvement
By actively involving citizens at every stage, “Green Deal Goes Citizens” bridges the gap between high-level sustainability goals and everyday community realities. This inclusive approach ensures that the solutions are not only practical but also widely supported.
